It's almost Monday?? Already??

You know those weeks were you wake up Monday counting down till Friday? I had one of those last week. I mean I was so tired coming back from Spring Break I couldn't wait to sleep in on Saturday. I slept a lot this weekend, and know I can't believe it's already Sunday night and here we are gearing up for another week at work.
The babies and mom are doing great. Vince and I took them to Operation Kindness on Friday and the vet tech had an awful time getting the flea medicine on her. I was amazed that she was able to get the medicine on mom with her bare hands. After thanking me abundantly for handling such a difficult case they gave us back an angry mom and 4 babies with a clean bill of health and a deworming treatment. They really were impressed that I was willing to handle such a difficult cat. It made me feel better knowing that this really is a harder than usual case and that I am not just a wussy-pants-nervous-wreck for nothing. Plus, the vet tech got scratched up good and she didn't seem to nervous about rabies, so I think I am finally realizing that I am not going to die!! The babies are so cute and Vince and I can't wait till we get to play with them!

Adventures Continue....

Well, time for an update!!
At this time today we only have 4 babies. I was able to take the 5 older ones to a foster who could bottle feed them so that mom could take better care of her remaining 4 babies...and she is doing just that! The babies are doing so great. Starting to open their eyes and look at me when I come in to check on them. They are precious. Mom and I have not become best friends yet...shockingly. Her favorite pastime is making my hand look like a pin cushion! For awhile there I was really afraid I had rabies. I was losing sleep and so I decided to call my doctor. She pretty much told me to calm down that I am not going to get rabies and I am going to be just fine. She gave me some antibiotic lotion for my many bites and scratches. I got a good nights sleep last night for the first time since the circus began.
The challenge at the moment is to get the flea medicine on the wild mom cat. Vince and I just tried and I got a fresh scratch. Yippee! More Rabies!! :) I decided that I am going to take mom cat and her babies to Operation Kindness and let them handle it. They offered to put the medicine on for me and I think it would be best if I did that. Really, how the heck am I supposed to put liquid flea medicine between the shoulders of a cat that moves lightning fast, is deathly afraid of me and can spit on you 10 yards away?? Yeah...ain't happening!!! However I still have to get her into the crate, drive there, drive back and get her back into the nesting box!!! Ughh!
Pictures coming soon!

Adventures in Fostering

Wow! What a ride it has been! Turns out that I have a feral momma cat on my hands. (Feral means wild) She won't let me touch her or her babies. Let me back up to the beginning. As I stated earlier I am fostering a momma cat and her 9, yes 9 babies. Some of the babies were 1 week old and some 2 weeks when I got them from Operation Kindness Monday. They told me that some of the babies are hers, but she adopted the others when their mother died. Because she isn't designed to nurse 9 babies, we were concerned about the little ones not being able to fight the older ones for the milk. So we started taking the older ones out, letting the younger ones nurse and then rotating the older ones back in. We did that all day Tuesday and then "H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks" broke loose. Mom, being the feral cat she is, did not like all the touching we were doing to her kittens. She felt unsafe and decided to move her babies into the closet. I walked in on her before she could get all of them in her. I immediately put her nesting box with remaining babies in the closet with her so she wouldn't neglect any of them. I went in about 20 minutes later and found her having EXPLOSIVE diarrhea all over my sweet husband's shoes. All the stress of us handling her babies really got to her. She knows how to use the cat sand and had done it prior but was all out of sorts and had an accident, a big accident. It was the stinkiest poo I have EVER smelled. Needless to say, we put her back in the tub with her nesting box and since then I haven't touched her babies and I go in there just to count breathing babies and give her food. Thing are going swimmingly with mom and I can only hope all the babies are getting milk. I have been making tallies to see how many times I see each baby drinking. Operation Kindness is working on getting a foster who is able to bottle feed the older ones so that mom has only 5 babies. I am not sure I will be fostering a momma cat and her babies again, especially if momma is feral. More to come!! Stay posted!

Guess What??

When I dropped off Bogus on Friday they asked me when I would be ready to foster again. Of course I said anytime....well, what I said exactly was "Fill the void Bogus will leave." Well, guess what...they called me yesterday and I have my next fostering assignment. I am getting a Mama Cat and her one week old kittens....I spent my evening last night researching what I need to do and I am picking them up today at 2pm...pictures to come! Yahoo!!!

Bogus, Bumpkin, Bumps, Bogie

If you know me, you know about my nicknames. I gave Bogus plenty of names and loved him enourmously, but...today I had to take him back the the shelter, my fostering duties are done. Both Bogus and I cried in the car on the way there. We sat in the parking lot and cried and snuggled before we went in. I delievered him to the foster coordinator with a quivering lip and I just made it back out the door of Operation Kindness before breaking down big time. I knew I couldn't keep him, but letting go wasn't easier for it. Vince even felt so bad he said we could work it out if I wanted him to stay. I just knew I had to do it. I remembered why I decided to foster. It's not to keep every animal I can keep, it's to love every animal I can love. It's not always easy doing something you are passionate about, but it's always right. Bye, Bye little Bumps...I miss you already. You are gonna be one hellova cat!!

P.S. If you are interested in helping animals, like Bumplestien, at Operation Kindness, a non-profit no-kill animal shelter, check out how you can by clicking here!

It's Snowing in Texas!

Pasta Night!!!

Last night we had our friends Jamie, Nick, Steph and Anthony over for dinner. The Boys played Tiger Woods and Madden while the girls made pasta from scratch. Jamie, Steph and I took a class a few months ago and we finally got together to put our education to the test. It was a lot of work, but VERY delicious.

But before that, Vince was in the yard working on getting our fruit and vegtable garden ready....I can't wait to pick my own produce!!!
