Bye Bye Mom!

Well, yesterday Vince and I took mom cat (Alley) back to Operation Kindness. Her time with us is finished. They are going to send her to a program here in the Dallas area called "Barn Cat, Inc." She will be able to run free and catch mice in a safe, fenced-in barn area. I was SO releaved to hear that she would be taken good care of.

So, that leaves us with just the little bumpkins! I LOVE them. They are so much fun. Last night was the first night alone without mom and they did great. They have been using the litter box and eating their wet food. Scooter is having a hard time adjusting. I had to shove some wet food into his mouth to help him figure out how to eat it. He was crying for mom and not eating all night and this morning so I put some in his mouth. He got real excited and tried to eat my finger! I put him in front of the food and he ate for about 15 minutes straight...poor thing was starving!

If you live in the area (or not) come and pet our little happy family. They love people and the other animals in our house. It is going to be a fun 4 weeks!!!

What a weekend it was!

I had the opportunity to be one of two chiropractors, the other being Camille, at the 2008 Dallas Open. The Open was the second tour stop on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball circuit. It was a lot of long hours that started Thursday morning with the qualifier to get into the main draw that started on Friday. I was amazed to learn of the numerous players who fly out to all the tour stops and try just to qualify for the main draw. Most of them lived in beach towns around LA and San Diego, but there were a few locals who decided to see if they were worthy.

Misty May and Kerri Walsh barely get the win.

Throughout the weekend we got to meet many amazing athletes, some coming up in the ranks and some that were legends. One of the legends I was blessed to meet was Karch Kiraly. He recently was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame and now announces the finals for the Tour. Very nice guy. I also got to treat my first Olympic Gold Medalist, Dain Blanton. He won gold back in 2000 on the sand and was knocked out early on Friday. He informed me that this was going to be his last year on tour. At 36 he is past his prime on the beach volleyball circuit.

The men and women who make up the tour are classy people and I have a new found respect for them all. They beat their bodies up for the chance to win a tourney here and there, and even more, represent their country in Beijing. In the end Phil and Todd won the men's event and Misty and Kerri won the women's. They are the #1 ranked teams in the world respectively and have their eyes set on gold in Beijing. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to take part in it all and I already cannot wait for next year's.

Some serious air on sand in the men's final.

For all you cat lovers do not worry, pictures are coming soon of the 4 crazy kittens living in our bathroom.

Mona, Peanut, Sweet Pea and ?

It's time for an update on the babies! We are in the process of naming our foster family. We are letting you all vote for mom's name and you have 2 more days to make your choice. As of now, Alley is winning. We named 3 of the 4 babies...the orange tabby is proving hard to name. He is the strongest and most curious. Garfield was an idea we threw around, but it just doesn't seem to fit.
Now, for the update. About 4 days ago mom started moving her babies out of the bathtub and onto the bathroom floor every time I was gone for more than an hour. I would do the same thing every time I came home to find them this way. I would get mom back into the tub and into the nesting box, then VERY carefully put the babies back in with her. But, she would have them out again within a few hours. I decided that her instincts where telling her to do this for a reason, so I went with it. I put her large crate (full of fluffy towels and blankets) under our bathroom counter and sure enough, within an hour she had moved all her babies into a this new home, completely abandoning the old nesting box. This is where they have been happily living for 3 days. I think she was doing this because the babies are growing more and more active and her instincts are telling her to get them to a place they can roam around and when they are ready get to food, water and access to the cat sand. My thoughts were confirmed because not even a day after they moved into the new house the babies started coming out of the crate and exploring the world around them. They are doing all the great things that they should be doing...cleaning, playing, exploring. When I am in the bathroom they follow my every move with their curious eyes and when mom is in the crate, they let me pet them...well, Sweet Pea is pretty skeptical, but the rest seem to actually enjoy being petted. Vince and I sat in there tonight for about 15 minutes and just observed in awe how wonderfully God made animals. The babies and mom are running on the instinct God gave them and it is fascinating to watch. Mom is still not even remotely close to being my best friend (or even acquaintances), but if I sit still long enough, she relaxes and closes her eyes while babies are nursing. I think it is a relief for her to be able to nurse outside the nesting box. She is hissing and growling a little less than before.
Whelp, that's the update. I am going to get some pictures up here as soon as I can!!
